Brentwood School Southport, England Old photographs

Old Photographs have always interested me.

Today a lady from Grassington came into the shop.

She had heard that I was interested in the History of the Southport / Birkdale / Halsall area of West Lancashire.

With her, she brought photographs of Brentwood School Southport

The photographs are from the 1928 period.

    photographs to follow

It would seem that Brentwood School was located on Albert Road or Morley Road/ Park Crescent in 1925
In 1929, I wonder if it it became Saxenholme and moved to Westcliffe Road Birkdale.

I am mislead by a piece of stationery that has printed on it ALBERT ROAD BIRKDALE.

    Back to the photographs.

They were owned by one of the relations of Doulton, the pottery makers of Lambeth, London.

The interesting part is that on the back of the photograph is written all the names of the Children attending the school in 1928.

This photograph may contain a picture of one of your Grand or Great Grand or even Great Great Grand Mother mother.

If your name or are you related to a -

why not call into the shop and have a view of the photographs.

May be you have some photographs of the people of the Southport area and now have no interest or need in keeping them. Just send them to me.

    Hello,

I went to Saxenholme School in (initially) Albert Road in the 1950s. The name of the road was changed to Saxon Road in about 1955. I think that Brentwood School became another school in Westcliffe Road - its name eludes me at this second - saxenholme had been around for at least 50 years when I went.

I hope that this helps. I was there when Miss Cockerill was headmistress.

    Best wishes,
    Sally Bennett

I guess it was pulled down at some point to make way for one of the ugly block of flats that are now on Saxon Road !

buildings in Sefton .. should be renamed

    BUILDING SIN SEFTON

councilors and planning officers have made so many mistakes with town planning, not just in Southport.

I have been involved in many developments especially historic buildings.

It is a laugh, a flat roof house and then a Swedish type house is allowed to be built opposite to a 12th century village church. Yet on the other hand six months can go by discoursing the shade of white paint and the colour of mortar.

Planners wake up, you are in a job paid for and working for the people of your area.

Councilors, it is not what you want, it is what the voters who voted you in to power want.

    REMEMBER THAT

Beautiful buildings have been allowed to be pulled down in Birkdale and Hesketh Park.
High rise buildings in Sefton built in the 1960's have all been pulled down at the expense of the rate payer.

My God the planners have got so much wrong.. Chapel Street, and the area adjacent, one way streets, parking areas. Even a market placed on King Street with 8 stall holders and the road closed all day. It is a joke with Market street just around the corner, the perfect location.

Just received this email 24th Sept 2014

    Jenny Tyrrell (Jenny@tyrrell.co.uk)

    Hello
I was a pupil at Brentwood school for one year only - 1964 as the school closed down in 1965. The headmistress was Miss Morley.
I remember walking to the chapel every morning carrying our Methodist hymn books. The school uniform code was very strict. We had to wear stockings with seams!
There was a huge conservatory on site.
I was not a happy pupil and was relieved when the school closed it's doors. I then went to Trinity Hall school, Trafalgar road, Birkdale. I was happy there! Unfortunately that school also closed it's doors in 1970 - nothing to do with me!
