    Hi,
What you have is 4 part marine / nautical telescope.

It looks to be that it was made the latter part of the 18th century to about Circa 1800.

Good maker C W Dixey, good address, New Bond St. London

Valuation is difficult with out viewing it.

I have one with an extra draw or pull or side than yours (5), owned by the founder of the Royal Insurance and I am expecting under £500 in auction £200 to £300 estimate.

    Good luck

remember the antique trade is full of oppinions

I'd date the telescope later, between 21 June 1837 and 21 January 1901.

Why do you think it's a maritime or nautical telescope?

The manufacturers who make the telescopes call them "maritime or nautical telescopes."

After purchase they can be used for anything, even in the desert. but still called maritime or nautical telescopes.

The style of the telescope is from the latter part of the 18th century

The first 163 years were spent at 3 New Bond Street and 19 Old Bond Street.

I'm interested in many things, although I claim no expertise. As people say of antiques, it's a matter of opinion, and mine's informed by historical fact.

The company was founded in 1777 by one William Fraser and not sold to Charles Wastell Dixey until 1824. Secondly, from the start the company supplied optical goods to the monarch, so had the telescope been manufactured during the reigns of George III, George IV or William IV, the engraving would refer to the "King". Hence my opinion that it dates from Victoria's reign.

I'd now suggest narrowing the time frame down to between 1838, when the firm moved to premises at 3 New Bond Street and 1862, when the name changed to C W Dixey & Sons (as illustrated in the print attached to the previous post). As an aside, I'd obviously be interested to hear how the item in the photo appears to differ in style from the company's telescopes produced after 1836.

I've also attached a trade card of Dixey's, wherein he refers to "telescopes... for military and naval purposes." On the company's website they display a rather fine specimen they produced for Buonaparte.

Do you also have the original leather case for the telescope?

Will you be valuing it as an 18th Century or a 19th Century telescope?

as you have said the telescope was engraved with the makers name in the early 1830'40s but it is like clocks and watches, old typewriters, cash registers when a maker trades in an item and resells the item a new identity can be engraved on.

I have seen a Russel of Liverpool watch with the address of Church St with their previous address scratched out. A Dayton Ohio N C R brass cash register made in 1890 re assembled with a 1930's reg number. Imperial typewriter company were famous for this as is most of the pottery makers in Stoke. An item can have a Reg number 1890 and be made as late as 1930.

Back to telescope that modal was made from the latter part of the 18th century right up to 1890.

    Circa 1800.
was my judgement with a short time given to research.

But with your research I would suspect a little more time was spent
you came up with the date of the move
    21 June 1837
but as you can imagine if an item was made as a "3 pull "and not sold for many years and the company moved and then a customer wanted a "4 pull" isn't it logical they might have just added an extra section and engraved it with the new address using the old parts.

This would make both dates correct.
an 18th centur item with a 19th century address.

as I say the antiques trad is full of opinions and the odd Tommy the guesser and we still have some Billy the Lier's .

good luck mate we will make you an antique dealer if it kills me

to bring the thread to a close.

The telescope has now been viewed.
It is much later than first thought. But the owner has over restored the item by over polishing it. The item now looks brand new. I have to complement the person who did the work on the item, but in the antique world as well as quality, originality is also very important.

Customers love things in its original state.

So please remember that if you are considering selling an item, leave it alone.

Do you mean by you, "Tommy the Guesser"?

By the way, the date I "came up with" in 1837 wasn't the company's move to New Bond Street but the date Victoria succeeded to the crown. The sort of date I'd expect an antique dealer to bear in mind when considering a 19th century artefact engraved with "optician to the Queen."

Have you secured a bargain for your chum in the US?
