County Councillor Paul Greenall, independent member for West Lancashire (East), has criticised the Conservative controlled County Council for what he describes as 'unacceptable delays in the delivery of basic front line services'.
Over the past few months, he's reported a number of faulty signs to the County Council, including some damaged ‘Public Footpath’ signs, with the expectation they would be mended or replaced.
In response however, the County Council advised they: “do not carry out maintenance of individual signs as the issues arise, but will ensure that these are dealt with when the West Lancashire signage is next done”.
When C/Cllr Greenall sought clarification as to when West Lancashire signage was next due to be dealt with, the County Council responded: “we don't have a timescale for that as at the moment we do not have a Rights of Way Officer covering the south of the County. My best estimate would be within the next 2-3 years”.
Yesterday Greenall told QLocal: "Mending and replacing street signs is one of the most basic front line services any Council can provide.
"The ‘Public Footpath’ sign at the top of the Ladies Walk on the A577 is in such a bad condition, it has fallen off its post!
"The County Council provides fat-cat Councillors with travel and meals allowances when attending meetings, it employs 13 members of staff earning over £100k per year, and recently increased Council tax by 5.99%. Clearly therefore, there is plenty of cash swishing round County Hall and so there is no excuse whatsoever for such an outrageous delay in providing such a basic front line service, which would take a workman a matter of minutes to complete. A 2-3 year delay is simply not good enough and I will be raising this issue publicly at the next Full Council meeting in July”.
County Councillor Greenall is pictured with the broken sign at the entrance to the Ladies Walk on the A577 (Cross Hall Brow) between Ormskirk and Westhead.
