Libraries and museums across the county are getting ready to celebrate Lancashire Day on 27 November, with events taking place to mark the occasion.

Lancashire Day dates back to 1295, when the county sent its first representatives to Parliament. This marked Lancashire's move into the wider sphere of politics.

Euxton Library will be celebrating the historic occasion by hosting Sid Calderbank, Chairman of the Lancashire Society and the Lancashire Dialect Group.

A Lancashire Day poetry and prose event run by John Cummings will be held at Colne Library. Visitors will be invited to take part in the readings.

Dean Fraser, the Quantum Poet, will be performing work from his new book 'Beyond Poetry' at Leyland Library.

Longridge Library will hold a cheese tasting event, featuring some locally-produced cheeses to celebrate Lancashire Day. Visitors will also be able to see a display of local photographs and try their hand at reading local dialect.

Folk group Trouble at Mill will be performing at Clayton Green Library on Tuesday 28 November to celebrate the occasion. There will also be Lancashire dialect performances, a Lancashire quiz, and a display of cotton industry items.

Visitors to the Record Office on Bow Lane, Preston will be able to buy refreshments from a pop–up café, hosted for the occasion by The Friends of Lancashire Archives.

All of these activities are free to attend.

Fleetwood Library will host a food demonstration supported by national award-winning Twelve restaurant. Demonstrations of Lancashire food using locally-sourced produce will take place. This event will take place on Tuesday 28 November from 7pm to -9pm. Tickets cost £2.50 to attend this event.

Burnley Campus Library will also reopen to the public on Monday, 27 November. Lancashire Day will be celebrated after the official opening at 9am.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "We've got a good range of events for people of all ages to enjoy.

"I'd encourage everyone to drop in and celebrate the history of our fantastic county, in a really enjoyable way."

Anyone who lives in the UK can join a Lancashire library, either online or by visiting in person. Membership is free and there are no age restrictions.
