Lancashire County Council is working hard to keep traffic moving, and ensure vital support is delivered to the most vulnerable, in spite of the severe weather which is particularly affecting the east of the county.

The council is asking people to help by checking on anyone they know who is vulnerable to make sure that they're staying warm and well, and have everything they need.

Gritting teams are working around the clock, and contractors have been called in to add to the council's capacity to plough snow and try to keep the main routes clear.

However, blustery conditions have led to some roads being closed due to drifting snow, and people are being asked to consider if their journey is essential before setting out.

Over 170 schools have been closed across the county, but most council services have been open as usual.

Recycling centres at Burnley and Haslingden have been closed today, and some libraries will be closing early. Nelson and Clitheroe libraries will be closing at 5pm rather than 6pm, and Burnley Library will be closing at 5pm rather than 7pm.

The council has been working closely with social care providers to ensure that support is delivered to those who need it most. It has adopted a flexible, common sense, approach, and in some places carers have been redeployed to ensure the most vital visits take place.
