Controversial moves to build a new pedestrian crossing on Aughton Street, Ormskirk look like they will be going ahead - despite opposition from local businesses and residents.

QLocal is the only local media to have been following the story over the last few months, breaking the exclusive after being contacted by a reader in February.

If given the green light by LCC cabinet members, it will mean a new crossing built opposite the entrance to the Morrisons - and the loss of vital car parking spaces outside the Bargain Booze and Acropolis chippy.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We held an informal consultation to get an idea what businesses in the area think of the proposal for a pedestrian crossing and have found that opinion is evenly split for and against.

"In order for them to serve their purpose, we have to put pedestrian crossings reasonably near where pedestrians would want to cross the road - we have considered some of the suggestions that were put forward for alternative locations, but unfortunately none were suitable.

"We have made some changes to the design to reduce the impact on parking for nearby businesses as much as possible, and will hold a formal consultation in the next few weeks.

"If any objections are received, these will be reported to the cabinet member for a decision whether to go ahead with the proposal."
