Ormskirk's Police Inspector has spoken exclusively to QLocal about the challenges facing her officers as the annual 'quart into a pint pot' parking problem rears its ugly head at Edge Hill University.
Car parking issues on and around the campus reach their peak soon as second years and others arrive back at the Uni; on Thursday Insp June Chessell said how officers will be part of a co-ordinated approach to police the problems of bad parking in and around local residential roads.
"I feel sorry for any students who are ticketed," she said.
"Last year, around 80 of them were penalised on one day alone and while we appreciate the pressures on parking at the Uni and how the powers that be there are trying to deal with the problem, the fact is that many students park illegally.
"The single white line markings on St Helens Road are there for a reason and we take many calls from local residents from roads around the campus who are upset at how parked cars affect their quality of life.
"Believe me, the last thing I want to do is devote precious resources to matters like this when we have more serious crimes to deal with but given the amount of complaints we receive it is something I have to address."
Meanwhile, a statement's been been released to QLocal from the EHU PR office which reads: "We encourage all campus users to use alternative modes of transport whenever possible (http://www.edgehill.ac.uk/sustainability/travel/)
"There may be occasions when parking permit holders are unable to park on campus, and we suggest they build in sufficient time to park off campus when necessary.
"In these instances we recommend that the local Council-owned parking facilities are used (http://www.westlancs.gov.uk/more/you...-ormskirk.aspx)
"Should any campus users choose to park on the public highway, they should do so safely and considerately in accordance with the Highway Code and any local parking restrictions, paying particular care and attention in local residential areas.
"They are informed that as St Helen’s Road, adjacent to the University, is designated a highway, parking is prohibited and any cars parked there are very likely to be issued with a fixed penalty notice by the Council."
A co-ordinated approach from the County Council's parking services team will see more staff from Preston travelling to Ormskirk to monitor the EHU parking situation after complaints from Our West Lancashire councillor Adrian Owens, see link: http://ormskirk.qlocal.co.uk/ormskir...s-55014105.htm

This has been a serious issue for over 12 years. When is our council going to get to grips with Edge Hill! No more development until Edge Hill resolve the issue they created. Edge Hills attitude, it's not our fault, we advise our students not to bring cars is simply NOT working their students are getting parking tickets year in year out for simply trying to attend a lecture, residents have become anti Edge Hill and this is one of the Key reasons! Both political parties when in power here in West Lancs have become far to close to Edge Hill, at times it's difficult for residents to tell who Elected WLDC and who's interest they are suppose to be serving.

Let's concrete another field for parking and then 3 years later, we can put a building on it when everyone has calmed down!
