Rosie McKenna, VP Welfare (right) and Kathryn Pidcock, Disabled Students’ Officer are pictured at the launch of Disability History Month at Edge Hill.
Its Students’ Union launched the events on campus to raise awareness of disabled students’ struggles for equality and human rights.
The theme of this year’s celebration is the “History of Disability and Art”, and the month sees a number of events taking place around Edge Hill University’s Campus.
Kathryn Pidcock, Disabled Students’ Officer at Edge Hill Students’ Union said, “I was 5 years old when I got diagnosed with Dyslexia and Dyspraxia.
"Luckily for me my parents helped me every day to strive further and beat any barriers set for me. By pushing myself I have managed to attend University and am even studying for my Masters.
"At a time when our benefits are being slashed and disability hate crime is on the increase we should be doing everything we can to stand in solidarity with all disabled people for a fair and just society.”
The SU's partnered with organisations including Edge Hill’s Sign Language Society, Edge Hill Sport, The Arts Centre and Edge Hill’s library to run activities to encourage students to think about disabled students’ struggles and ways in which we can all help to break down barriers, including sign language classes, films and literature showcases, dance workshops, speaker sessions and flashmobs.
