St Bede’s celebrated a fantastic set of exam results yesterday!
Students were delighted to receive their grades that were just reward for their hard work over the last five years, with the results a real team effort involving every member of the school community including site staff, admin team, catering staff, pastoral leaders and subject teachers.
These results are also a testament to the leadership of Chris Horrocks who completes six, highly successful years as Head teacher of the school; St Bede’s now has a new Headteacher, Phil Denton, who will now look to fulfill the vision he has set out for a school which strives to provide ‘…a world class Catholic education that encourages the students to want to make the world a better place’.
The class of 2018 achieved record breaking scores in several measures. For examples for the basics measure which includes English and maths, 80% of students achieved grades of 4 and above in both core subjects and 68% for grades of 5 and above in the same measure - results for English and Maths at St Bede’s are among the top performing departments in the NW.
And the Attainment 8 figure, which looks at attainment across a range of subjects improved significantly to 56.58 which is significantly above previous national averages.
The success of students was across the board perhaps most notably for disadvantaged students who actually outperformed their non-disadvantaged peers, while other groups such as those in receipt of Free School Meals and those with additional educational needs also outperformed national averages.
As well as the core subjects, several subjects achieved outstanding results in a year which saw much change to the course content and specifications - in History 72% of students achieved a grade 7 or above which is equivalent to the old A-grade, 47% of students achieved 7+ in RE, 75% of students achieved a strong pass (5+) in PE, 83% of students achieved a strong pass in Music and in the sciences 92%, 88% and 86% of students achieved strong passes in Biology, Chemistry and Physics respectively.
There were many other success stories subjects across the board; many students achieved grade 9s in various subjects along with top grades for a great deal of students who have propelled the school to this summer’s success through their efforts.
Perhaps the most rewarding success stories for the staff are the examples of students that have triumphed over adversity to achieve the best that they were able to.
Concluded Mr. Denton - pictured with one of the students: "We are delighted with the fantastic achievements of the Class of 2018.
"I would like to congratulate them for a truly fantastic achievement. This success is not possible without the support of our wonderful staff throughout the school, our supportive parent body and the many communities we are a member of which contribute to the wider educational experience of St Bede’s students.
"We wish all the Class of 2018 the very best for the future. As a school community St Bede’s is very proud of every student who collected their results this week."
