Will west Lancashire be among the winners in this year's Lancashire Best Kept Village competition?

All will be revealed soon with judges visiting Halsall, Haskayne, Holt Green, Lathom, Parbold, Scarisbrick, Shirdley Hill and Town Green during June and July and awarded marks in the various categories.

The villages with the highest marks in each category received a further visit from committee members and the two villages in each category with the highest marks are now in this month's final judging - winners are announced at the Lancashire Best Kept Village Competition awards ceremony in October at The Villa, Wrea Green.

This end of season event lasts a couple of hours and trophies for winning villages and the Certificates of Merit are given out for outstanding contributions in the various categories.

Here's what the judges have been looking at:

1 Place of worship & grounds

The condition of the outside of the buildings, all surrounding grounds, paths, car parks, fencing and notice boards will be judged. The interior of any place of worship will not be judged.

    2 School & grounds (including Children’s Nurseries)

The judges will assess the exterior of the building and associated grounds and play areas.

3 Village pub or inn / restaurant

Any business, which does not include residential accommodation. The judges will assess the building, floral decorations, car park, beer gardens & signs.

4 Public Hall, Community Centre, Institute, Library, Health Centre, Youth Centre

Any building where members of the community meet, such as village halls, youth clubs, W.I. halls, scout and guide huts, church halls, libraries, health centres. The judges will assess the exterior of the building and the associated grounds and car parks.

    5 Public playing field/sports ground

Open spaces, used by the general public for recreation purposes, which can include football and cricket pitches, tennis courts etc (please note - private clubs are excluded). The judges will assess the general condition of the field and any equipment present on the field including safety. Boundary fences, hedges, buildings & seats will also be judged.

    6 Children’s Play Area

Any enclosed area containing play equipment for use by children. The judges will assess the variety of equipment, safety, condition, boundary fences, seats & bins etc.

    7 Industrial or commercial premises

This section also includes garages with repair facilities and filling stations. Single businesses only – a business park or complex may not be entered. The judges will assess the building, grounds, railings & sign.

    8 Shop

This section includes all premises whose main business is retailing, including post offices, hairdressers’ & cafes, but excluding supermarkets & those in Section 7. The judges will assess the building, frontage, floral display, window display & surrounds.

    9 Residential/Nursing home/Sheltered accommodation

Res/Nursing home - usually one main building, which offers communal living accommodation for senior citizens. “Abbeyfield” type accommodation and private or local authority residential nursing homes are included. The judges will assess the exterior of the buildings and associated grounds OR Self-contained sheltered accommodation such as almshouses or groups of bungalows for senior citizens with or without a warden system. The judges will assess the exterior of the buildings and associated grounds.

    10 Hotel/Guest House

Any business which includes guest accommodation. The judges will assess the building, grounds, car park & signs.

    11 Notice Board

Any board used to display notices & information. The general condition of the notice board & surrounds will be assessed. Notices displayed will be judged for variety, presentation & being up to date. Notice boards showing only the name of the park, hall or church are not eligible, nor are those giving only permanent information, including tourist boards.

    12 War Memorial

When in the grounds of a church the War Memorial and its surrounds will be judged separately from the church grounds. Memorial plaques inside churches are not included. Surrounds include grass, flowerbeds & railings.

    13 Bowling Green

The judges will assess the playing surface of the green but most emphasis will be on the surrounds including pavilions, seats, fencing, gutters and flowerbeds.

    14 Cricket ground & surrounds

The section is open to any cricket ground that has a surface reserved for the wickets and a purpose built pavilion. In addition to the field & pavilion, the scoreboard, sightscreens & surrounding landscape will be judged.

    15 Public Garden

Small gardens open to the public but not parks. The judges will assess the flower beds, hedges, lawns, seats, railings & signs.

Golf courses, fishing lakes and other large areas are not eligible in any section, as they are too difficult to judge.
