    Have you ever asked a child where their food comes from? Their response is often the supermarket...

    To change this way of thinking, Booths is inviting customers to visit their producers in a series of visits called 'Booths at the Farm', to encourage their customers to find out more about how their food is made.

    Farmers and producers are opening their gates to groups of Booths customers in support of National Countryside Week, giving an insight into how their products are sown, grown and produced from the 27th July to the 5th August.

    During the visits, guests will be given exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ tours, learn about how their food is grown or made and taste the great British countryside at its best.

    Edwin Booth, Chairman of Booths and trustee of The Prince’s Countryside Fund told QLocal yesterday: "Booths respects and values the importance of family farms and their contribution to the countryside.

    "Our farmers and producers create some of the finest food and drink in the country and work tirelessly come rain or shine to farm the land and maintain the landscapes enjoyed by us all.

    "We are proud of these important relationships and the enthusiastic farmers who supply Booths while demonstrating support for The Prince’s Countryside Fund and its objectives”

    Friday 27th July 11am - Beekeeping with Urban Organic

    Blackpool's Urban Organic was established in 2014 to provide gardening and beekeeping as therapeutic activities to groups of all ages. They created community gardens, so they could grow edible and bee-friendly plants, including tending the hives that thrive on the roof of the Booths Poulton store.

    After a safety talk, guests suit up in protective gear. They will be given special tips on how to behave around the bees, making sure every guest is comfortable with being in their environment.

    Guests will then be invited to come up close and personal with the bees, getting a chance to hold the frames if they wish. This will be the first time that the Poulton bees that reside on the roof of the Booths store, are unveiled to the public!

    Monday 30th July 3pm - Tomato growing at Croftpak

    The Ascroft family have been growing salad crops and tomatoes for Booths for nearly 30 years, and in this little corner of west Lancashire, Croftpak of Hesketh Bank are the only UK nursery growing San Marzano tomatoes, prized for their sweetness and quality.

    They grow them under glass using biological controls and bees to pollinate. Peter Ascroft will share his tomato growing secrets and give insight into what ingredients make the perfect plum tomato grown on the Lancashire “Riviera.”

    Guests will receive a tour and tasting session of all of the varieties that they grow.

    Monday 30th July 1pm - Shrimping with Furness Fish & Game

    Furness Fish have been supplying fresh fish for almost 10 years, supplying traditionally prepared Morecambe Bay Potted Shrimps.

    Local shrimpers catch shrimp not from a boat, but by pulling a net through the water in Morecambe Bay using a well-rusted Sixties Nuffield tractor. The shrimp is taken to Furness Fish and Game, where the shrimp are cooked, “picked” and transformed into potted shrimps. Cooked in butter and sealed with more butter, potting is an old method of preservation which, like other methods of curing and pickling, makes for a distinct and delicious flavour.

    The guests will receive a hands on experience, spending time in both the peeling room and the potting room. Guests will learn how to peel and pot the famous Morecambe Bay shrimp, learning about the secrets of Morecambe Bay shrimping along the way, but the seasoning remains a secret.

    Tuesday 31st July 9:30am - Cheese making at Mrs Kirkham’s

    Ruth Kirkham began making the now famous Lancashire cheese in 1978, after her mother Ruth Townley retired. Following her mother’s retirement, Ruth was given all her mother’s equipment, along with her expert cheese making knowledge and the all-important recipe.

    With the help of her husband John, Ruth turned what was an old piggery into a cheese making dairy and continued to make cheese here for the next 30 years. For years Ruth and John milked their heard of 40 Holstein Friesian cows and turned it into cheese, they only had two presses and would make four 20kg cheeses a day.

    Around 15 years ago, Ruth’s son Graham, returned back to the family farm and has worked alongside his mum making cheese ever since. A new cheese making dairy was built in 2008 as well as a state of the art milking parlour and five star accommodation for the 100 strong herd of cows.

    Happy cows = good quality milk = Good Cheese.

    Wednesday 1st August 10:30am - Cheese making at Wensleydale Creamery

    The Wensleydale Creamery is immersed in heritage, with 1000 years of cheese history behind it. His Royal Highness the Prince of Wale’s thoroughly enjoyed his visit to the creamy back in 2015.

    The Wensleydale Creamery is an award-winning, independent traditional cheese-maker and specialist blender of cheese with fantastic ingredients. They use traditional methods to handcraft cheese to time-honoured recipes, using milk from local farms, as well as being creative with the development of new cheese recipes.

    Guests will have an exciting few hours at the creamery. They will have free access to the Wensleydale Cheese Experience, watch live demonstrations of butter and cheese being made, get to sample over 20 varieties of cheese and be able to watch cheese being hand crafted live from the private viewing area.

    Thursday 2nd August 1pm - Spilman’s Strawberries

    The Spilman family have been growing strawberries at church Farm, Sessay since 1970.

    Starting off with just 2 acres and gradually increasing to the present 12 acres, the farm produces quality fruit throughout June and July. Spilman’s has a range of strawberry varieties to choose from, including Rosie, Christine, Korona, Symphony and Florence. Each variety has its own characteristics and delicious flavour.

    Guests will be given a full farm tour, learning about the different variation of strawberries the farm grows. They will be able to pick their own strawberries and continue to the café for light refreshments. The group will be able to ask any questions throughout the tour and will be given an exciting insight on the history of the farm and the machinery used in strawberry growing.

    Friday 3rd August 4pm - Farm Yard Ales
    Farm Yard Ales produces unique high end ales that explore styles from all around the world. They pride themselves on being a little different, throughout their eight core beers, not one of them is the same.

    Founder, Steven Holmes, wanted to follow his passion whilst maintaining a sustainable business for himself and future generations, making use of being based on the family farm.

    Farm Yard Ales was a “daft idea” thought up by Steven when he was in his local and with the support of his parents, the rural Development Program and NatWest, Farm Yard Ales was created.

    Steven built everything from scratch, the steel framed building and the sloping floors have all been carefully designed purposely to house a 2,000 litre brew plant and all the associated equipment.

    Guests will enjoy an early start to the weekend at Farm Yard Ales, being greeted with refreshments at the farm, followed by a tour and a brewery tour and finished off with a taster session of ale.
