Active West Lancs is inviting you to try exciting new activities this month which will help you improve your health and meet new people.



Need to start looking after yourself a bit better? Then sign up to the new 12-week Active Weight programmes in Burscough and Skelmersdale.

The two-hour daytime sessions help you discover the benefits of making healthier food choices, improving your health and becoming more active. The sessions are fun and the second half includes some form of gentle exercise, which is advisable but optional. Sessions commenced Monday 4 September, however people can still sign up until week three of the course. After the success of the first Active West Lancs ‘Couch to 5k’ course, a new nine-week programme commenced on Monday 11 September at Lordsgate Township CE Primary School. Sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6-7pm, and with the help of programme leaders you can go from small beginnings to completing a continuous 35-45 minute run by week nine. Later in the month Active West Lancs is organising a September Health Week of free fun activities. Events start on Monday 18 September with the Active Eco: Open day at Burscough Community Farm, Meadow Lane between 10am and 2pm. Optional activities include hands-on harvesting and crafts. All activities are free of charge and open to residents of West Lancs. On Thursday 21 September you can join thousands of other people across Lancashire to cover a mile distance any way you choose. Swim, run, cycle, walk, space hop – the more creative the better. Please record your mile at www.activewestlancs.org.

The week ends on Friday 22 September with Active Leisure when you can take part in fun activities including indoor bowls, badminton, squash, table tennis, virtual spin, and walking football at Burscough Racquets & Fitness Club between 9am–12pm. You can also enjoy refreshments and a leisure quiz at 12pm.

Active Golf is a brand new initiative of weekly golf sessions on Fridays, 10am-12pm at Beacon Golf Club, Up Holland. Equipment is provided and no previous golf experience is needed. So if you fancy some fresh air and the chance to meet new people have a chat with your GP or medical practitioner and if you meet the criteria, then you can be referred. The activity will start when appropriate numbers have signed up.

Councillor Yvonne Gagen, West Lancashire Borough Council portfolio holder for Leisure, said: “Active West Lancs provides wonderful health and leisure activities for local people. I am sure there will be something you fancy trying, so sign up for one of the programmes or come along to the activities and you will reap the benefits.”

In addition to these sessions, Active West Lancs continues to deliver weekly health walks and Active Gym programmes.
