MP Rosie Cooper says she's 'pleased' over news that the County Council's to launch of a long overdue consultation on reducing the speed limit on Ormskirk’s A59 County Road.

The MP has been campaigning for the speed reduction for over a year – Lancashire County Council initially refused, and subsequently two lives have been lost in separate road traffic collisions.

Lancashire County Council will now be launching a public consultation on Thursday to gauge people's views on reducing the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on the A59 between and including its junctions with Burscough Road and Halsall Lane.

A new development is underway just to the north of Burscough Road and it is proposed that the northerly point for the 30mph limit be extended by 250 metres north of the Burscough Road junction.

The proposal to change the speed limit is to improve safety on this stretch of road.
and this eveniung Coop[er told QLocal: "On such a short strip of road along the A59 there have been a high number of accidents and collisions and this cannot continue. Lives are being lost and serious injuries being sustained.

“I pleaded with the County Council as the Highways Authority to prioritise the A59 County Road for road safety and traffic calming measures, as they have previously indicated to me that they would be relooking at the junction with Hayfield Road and Green Lane.

“Having recently met with LCC’s Director of Highways Steve Young in Ormskirk and Chief Executive Angie Ridgwell at County Hall in Preston, I am pleased that action is now being taken on the speed limits along County Road.

“I said it previously that Government guidance might steer one way, but common sense and local knowledge needs to have influence so we are not waiting for yet another death on the road before action is taken, but this was ignored. Now local residents have an opportunity to feed into the proposed changes and shape the outcome, and I encourage them to do so.

"The consultation will close on 12 September and I would encourage you to have your say. Please send your views in writing to the county council directly or through the website https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/roads-parking-and-travel/roads/roadworks-and-traffic-regulation-orders/permanent/proposed-speed-limit-orders-slos/"

If introduced, the change in speed limit will require new signs to indicate the start and finish of the 30mph speed limit and the removal of any existing 40mph signs within this section and at the junctions with the A59 where roads have an existing 30mph speed limit.
