Opposition is growing to controversial plans to build a new solar farm over the war horse graves in Lathom.
Yesterday, BBC North West Today featured the item on its lunchtime and evening news as anger grows over the mere suggestion that the graves should be disturbed. Local historian Dot Broady-Hawkes was interviewed on site and archive footage of the old Remount depot used to illustrate the site's history and importance.
A local farmer originally contacted historian Paul Kenyon regarding the siting of the solar farm planned by a company called Lightsource BP; he's also been in touch with the Borough council’s Conservation Areas Advisory Panel.
Said Paul: “The farmer is adamant that building the Solar Farm in that area will be sacrilegious and disrespectful to the sacrifice made during WW1 of dozens of horses that died at the Remount Depot.
“The horses in these graves all went through what was known as the 'sick line', a row of sheds where horses were treated by the Army Veterinary Corps. on arrival from across the World. Some did not recover from their journey and were put down.
“Others who were brought back from the front lines went through the 'Sick Line' and were treated for their injuries but many did not survive.
“These horses were then buried within that area of the Remount Depot, and the graves can clearly be seen in the field, especially during the winter,” Paul concluded.
Later this year there are plans to erect a memorial plaque at the Park entrance to remember the men and animals which went through those gates and served the Country, with Lathom Park Trust are involved in the funding for the memorial.
“I am not sure if the people at Light source or NSG are aware of what those fields contain and if nothing else they should be mindful of any disturbance of the graves.
“The farmer has said he does not know why the solar panels are not being placed on the tops of all the industrial buildings at NSG rather than on what he believes is green belt land and a War Horse graveyard.
