Following an approach from Rosie Cooper MP, West Lancashire Borough Council have confirmed they are making the provision of electric car charging bays a necessity in all future planning applications for housing.
Having written to the council on behalf of residents concerned by the lack of charging points, MP Rosie received the commitment from the Director of Development and Regeneration that future housing developments must include the provision.
This commitment also comes on the back of West Lancashire Borough Council’s current locations at Derby Street in Ormskirk and Smithy Walk in Burscough where they offer electric car charging points.
Previously, MP Rosie has also written to supermarket chains Tesco and Asda who both have large stores and car parks in the area encouraging them to install points at their stores.
This afternoon, Cooper told QLocal: “Residents are increasingly writing to me about the need to develop the electric vehicle charging infrastructure across West Lancashire.
“The growth of electric and Ultra Low Emissions Vehicles is continuing and I’m pushing for the local authorities and businesses to provide the necessary charging points, where possible.
“With new housing developments coming on stream and applications being made, it is promising to hear that West Lancashire Borough Council are making it mandatory for developers to provide charging points in new houses.
“This will go some way to encouraging more drivers to switch over to lower emissions vehicles, but we’ve still some way to go before we see more publicly available points right across West Lancashire.”
