MP Rosie Cooper has welcomed Lancashire County Council’s decision to reduce the speed limit on Ormskirk’s A59 County Road.
County Road has been a road traffic accident blackspot in recent times with several collisions including fatalities and serious injuries sustained.
MP Rosie and local residents have campaigned for urgent safety improvements on County Road, which has junctions with Burscough Road, Yew Tree Road, Green Lane, Hayfield Road and Southport Road.
LCC finally agreed to go out to consultation on reducing the speed limit in August. Council's cabinet has now agreed to cut the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph along sections of County Road and High Lane, and this afternoon Cooper told QLocal: "This has been a long, hard fought campaign to bring about safety improvements to this stretch of County Road, where lives have been lost and serious injuries sustained.
"I am pleased that there has finally been some progress and that the County Council's listened to local residents and taken action.
"Reducing the speed limit and new road markings and signs will hopefully show some improvement, but I will be urging the Council and Police to undertake enforcement and monitoring to ensure the measures are making the road safer.
"I will also be inquiring as to what technological installations can be added to further improve the safety along the A59."
