Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service is holding a number of recruitment events for retained firefighters, working on an on-call basis.
The LFRS information events are being held at Tarleton, Ormskirk and Skelmersdale and fire stations from 7-9pm tomorrow, July 26, August 2 and August 9.
Applicants for the roles need to be aged 18-plus, have a good level of all-round fitness, live or work within five minutes of their nearest station, have a good standard of eyesight and hearing (aided/unaided) and be literate and numerate - ideally, they will be able to provide weekday daytime and weekend cover.
The application process involves visiting the nearest station on a drill night to discuss the role, hours and response times.
Applicants will also be required to complete application and medical forms, take fitness and psychometric tests, which include reaching level 9.6 on the ‘beep’ shuttle test, and take part in a practical assessment day and interview.
David Birrell, crew manager and retained support officer, told QLocal: “Retained firefighters will be paged and need to be no more than five minutes away as they can be called to a variety of emergencies, from road, rail or air crashes, to floods, fires, chemical spills or rescuing people trapped in confined spaces.
“They need to be available for a set number of hours per week, in return for a salary and receive additional payments including allowances for disturbance, turnout and attendance. While on call they must be alcohol-free and clean-shaven and those responding while at work must have their employer's consent. Those responding from home need to be aware the role may impact on family life.
“Whether you have a full-time job, are unemployed or are looking for a career that you can fit around child care needs, being a retained firefighter can fit in with many different lifestyles.”
