This week saw a return to league action after the cup matches last week and the postponement of all league matches the previous week due to the very sad passing of our league President, Dave Wright. It certainly didn't affect the progress of Reigning Champions, Southport Conservative Club as they recorded their seventh successive win after a 4-2 triumph over third placed, Olympic BC B. This outcome sees them maintain their three point advantage at top of the league table and the Olympic B team remain in third spot some ten points off the pace but they do have an important match in hand over the top two sides.. The match also saw Olympic B's Paul Williams clinch this week's 'Break of the Week' prize with a really nice break of 46 in his frame success.

Paul's break began with a terrific opening red ball pot as the cue ball lay tight on the side cushion but not only did he produce that superb pot, he gained ideal black ball position. Paul proceeded to pot the black and in quick fashion with that usual fluent style and excellent positional play, he dispatched a further four reds, all with blacks, to rapidly reach the forty point mark. A sixth red followed were Paul screwed up the table to take the blue ball but fell short on his next red to leave him a tricky long red ball pot. Unfortunately, Paul narrowly missed that red to bring an end to a fine break on forty six.

Paul narrowly missed out on becoming Individual Handicap Champion for the fourth time in the last five seasons last term as, unfortunately, he was beaten on the final black ball in the deciding frame of the contest. He has also been Individual Champion of the league twice in ` the last five seasons in 2012-13 & 2014-15 and not to mention Pairs Champion with his partner, Ian A Jones in successive campaigns in 2012-13 & 2013-14 as well as runners-up in 2015-16. In fact, Paul amazingly, captured all three Individual and Pairs Titles within our league in the 2012-13 campaign. To put this all into perspective, no player until then, in the seventy two year history of the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League has achieve this monumental feat, in fact, only two players have ever won the Individual Championship and Individual Handicap in the same campaign which were Malcolm Cowley back in 1976-77 season and more recently, John Wade in the 2003-04 campaign. Paul, an ever present member of the Ormskirk League Representative Team, was again part of our victorious squad that last November won the UK League snooker Tournament for an
amazing third time after wins in 2010 & 2012 as well as runners-up in 2011 & 2014 an
unbelievable achievement for a small league like ourselves. Paul started playing in the Ormskirk League at the inception of the 2001-02 campaign representing Aughton Institute A until the completion of the 2009-10 season were his side finally captured the coveted Division One Crown after finishing Runners-up the previous four campaigns, with the sad split of that title-winning side, Paul joined Les Dodd SC with some of the winning Aughton team for one season finishing Runners-up in their league campaign and capturing the Le Rose Cup. Paul now represented Olympic BC after the sad closure of Crosby Village SC last year who joining our league at the start of the 2012-13 season. Paul has also won the Kenney Cup and Le Rose Cup twice with his old Aughton team and in his debut season in the League was victorious in winning the Mac Trophy (Individual Handicap).

Maghull RBL A continue to push the pace-setters hard and at the end of their evening had recorded yet another victory, their sixth in their first seven matches, as this time they defeated struggling Stanley Club A 4-2 to sit those three points behind the leaders. In fact, their only defeat this term came at the hands of the Southport outfit.

Aughton Institute A continue to play some fine snooker and moved into fourth slot in the table after a battling 3-3 draw with Maghull RBL B although looking back they will be a little disappointed as they found themselves 2-0 up in the early stages of the match but the Maghull B outfit came straight back to level at 2-2. The Maghull B side sit in seventh in the standings.

Upholland Social drop into fifth in the league proceedings this time around as it was their
turn to sit out their free week.

Rainford X SSC recorded their first success of the campaign with a solid 4-2 away win at the expense of Olympic BC A. This outcome saw them move up in eighth in the league table. The Walton outfit continue in sixth spot.

Aughton Institute E compiled their best result so far this season with a 5-1 away victory over Scarisbrick NSC and this result was enough to see them move up two places in the league standings.

The other match played this week saw St Cuthberts complete their second success of the current campaign with a 4-2 win over Skelmersdale Wardens A and this result was enough to lift them off the bottom of the league table.

Upholland Social sat out their free week this time around as mentioned above.

Other notable break this week was – I A Jones (Olympic BC B) 32.

The Division One merit table sees Scarisbrick NSC remain at the top of the table with 87 points despite a heavy defeat this particular week and had their lead cut to twelve points. Olympic BC A continue in second place after also suffering defeat this time and sit on 75 points. Skelmersdale Wardens A maintained third place despite a reversal this time round around and now lie on 73 points. The seventh week updated table can be found below.

Division 2

This week saw more changes at the summit of the Second Division as Aughton Institute B returned to the top of the table in emphatic style. They ended their evening with a very solid 5-1 away triumph at the expense of Stanley Club C. Farmers Club moved into second position after a 4-2 home victory over Skelmersdale Wardens C to continue unbeaten in their first seven matches played to date so far. This result sees them sit that one point off the pace-setters and look like they could mount a serious push for league honours this term.

Aughton Institute D recorded the result of the week with a comprehensive 5-1 success over last week's leaders and club compatriots, Aughton Institute C in yet another Aughton 'Derby' match. With this outcome it saw the Aughton D outfit move up into third spot in the league proceedings and sit just two points off the pace with the Aughton C team dropping four places into fifth slot. This match saw Aughton D's Alan Pendleton in good touch with a nice break of 21 in his frame win.
