    Report from Barry Adlington

    UK League Snooker Championship 2016

It's with immense pride that I can announce that the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League representative side have this weekend won the UK League Snooker Championship 2016. Our league were winning this very prestigious event for the third time and what a wonderful achievement for such a small league like ourselves.

The event was held at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds and our squad consisted of Barry Adlington (Captain), Gareth Hibbott, Paul Williams, Ian A Jones, Will Jerram, Martin Brown & Paddy Tyndall and I can't thank these lads enough for giving their time over Friday, Saturday & Sunday for our league, as well as their fabulous efforts, commitment and tremendous playing over such a very busy two days of very hard fought and competitive snooker.

    Stephen Maguire Exhibition Night

Join us for an evening of snooker entertainment in the company of UK Snooker Champion Stephen 'On Fire' Maguire who will be appearing at Aughton Institute on Saturday 18th March 2017.

The evening will commence at 7.30 pm with the doors open at 6.45pm. Stephen captured the very prestigious UK Snooker Championship in 2004 and has won a further four ranking event titles. He spent eleven consecutive years in the elite top sixteen of the world snooker rankings, two seasons as number two, and is currently ranked 19th. He has made well over 300 competitive centuries and this includes three maximum breaks. Stephen will be playing ten frames of snooker from a mixture of players including three of our junior players. There will also be three auction frames on the night to give you a real opportunity to play one of the best stars the game has to offer as well as a raffle winner who will play Stephen in the final frame of the evening. The evening will be supporting two of our fabulous charities in The Lancashire Defibrillator Campaign & Christopher Grange Nursing Home. Also, the evening will be presented by our fabulous MC, Dave 'the mighty' Quinn and superb music entertainment provided by Trevor Ford. Hot food will be provided on the night and tickets are priced at £25. We really do have a limited number of tickets available and why now consider buying a loved one a ticket for Christmas? For more info, call Barry Adlington on 07746217736.

    Reminder – Submitting Results

Can I ask all team captains that if you are borrowing a player from another team (within the league rules) that you text myself (Barry Adlington), during the match, to inform me of this and I will immediately place that players name in your team list. This enables you to submit your result correctly. Thank you for your co-operation on this matter.

    Division 1

This week saw a return to league action after last week's break for the second round of the Kenney Cup competition in the First Division of the Ormskirk & District Amateur Snooker League. Southport Conservative Club continue as leaders of the elite Division after recording their eighth consecutive victory with a fine 5-1 triumph over Rainford X SSC. This outcome sees them hold a one point advantage from their nearest rival. The match saw Southport's Dave Hartley in the breaks for the second match running and this time around it saw him capture this week's 'Break of the Week' accolade with a superb break of 57 in his frame success.

Dave's break began when he was given an opportunity by his opponent and he certainly took it with aplomb. He potted a nice opening red and gained perfect black ball position and a decent contribution was certainly possible. After dispatching that black ball, Dave proceeded to pot a further four reds, all with blacks, with some fine potting and precise positional play to see the break reach the forty point mark. After taking his next red, Dave had to use the rest to pot the next black and played a lovely shot on that black ball to come ideal on his next ball. He took red, black and another red with his next three shots but that last pot unfortunately saw the cue ball resting on the black ball after he over-screwed it. A long green was the only option for him to continue this fine effort and, unluckily, he rattled the green in the pocket and it sadly stayed on the table and brought an end to an excellent break on fifty seven.

Maghull RBL A maintain second place in the league standings after yet another solid performance this time around. They comprehensively defeated Quarry Green TAC 5-1 to sit that single point behind the pace-setters and are very much looking like a huge title contending side as each match goes by. The Kirkby outfit drop into fifth slot in the table. The match also saw Maghull's Paul Davies in tremendous form as he compiled a superb break of 50 in his frame win. This is arguably Paul's best form for many seasons as he was part of the Maghull RBL A side that won back-to back league titles back in 1999-00 & 2000-01.

Crosby Village SC also remained unchanged in league position, and sit in third spot, after their solid 5-1 away victory over Olympic BC. This outcome sees them just two points off the pace and will certainly be pushing for the Divisional crown come the business end of the campaign. The match saw Crosby's Paul Williams in fine nick with a classy break of 43 in his frame win.

Aughton Institute E got back to winning ways with a hard fought 4-2 success over club compatriots, Aughton Institute A in the Aughton 'Derby' match and as a result of this moved up to fourth in the league proceedings, just four points off top spot. This match saw Aughton E's Gerry Canning in top form with an excellent break of 45 in his frame success.

Stanley Club A recorded their best win of the current season as they ended their evening with a 6-0 away demolition of Skelmersdale Wardens A. This sees them move up a place the league table and they now lie in sixth.

Another team to register their best success this term are St Cuthberts as they comprehensively defeated Upholland Social 5-1 and this sees them move up three places in the standings and into tenth.

The other match played this week saw Scarisbrick NSC and Maghull RBL B go into battle and at the end of hard fought match both teams shared the spoils with the match ending as a 3-3 stalemate.

Other notable breaks this week were – B Adlington (Aughton Institute E) 37, R Radford (Maghull RBL A) 37, T Stevenson (Crosby Village SC) 36, A Jones (Maghull RBL A) 33 & P Tyndall (Southport Conservative Club) 32.

The Division One merit table sees Scarisbrick NSC continue in first position on 85 points after their draw this week and remain nine points clear of their nearest rivals. Maghull RBL B continue in second spot on 76 points after, they too, recorded a draw this time around. Third place is still occupied by Rainford X SSC despite defeat this week and now lie on 73 points.

    Division 2

This particular week in the Second Division saw Stanley Club B continue to lead at the summit of Division Two by four points after this time around they recorded a solid 5-1 success at the expense of Farmers Club. They will be looking to push on over the coming months as they chase their first league title. The match saw Farmers Karl Prescott compile a break of 22 despite his frame loss.

Aughton Institute D remain in second place after a solid 4-2 away triumph over Skelmersdale Wardens C and sit those four points behind the pace-setters and will surely be pushing for honours this term and will be fighting for the Division Two crown come the business end of the season.

Aughton Institute B continue in third spot after a fine 4-2 triumph over Skelmersdale Wardens B. This outcome sees them four points off the leaders and they too will be certainly be battling for promotion come the end of the current campaign. The Skelmersdale B outfit lie in fourth slot and sit eight points off the pace. The match saw Aughton B's John Gore engineer a break of 23 but wasn't enough to seal a frame win.

The other match played this week saw Lathom & Burscough RBL and Aughton Institute C clash and at the end of the evening it saw them share the spoils as they battled out a 3-3 draw. Steve Moss of the Aughton C team was in good nick with a nice break of 23 in his frame victory.

Other notable break this week was – C Caunce (Farmers Club) 20
