Local GP and serial fundraiser, Dr. Simon Frampton, added a new twist to the well known Three Peaks Challenge this summer.
His son, Dan, aged 18 has passed all the requirements for the Royal Marines Officer training and fancied completing the Challenge to climb Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis within 24 hours.
Rather than him being the focus of the fundraising, considering Dan's exceptional fitness, Dr Frampton decided to make it a driving challenge: completing the 1000 mile journey in under 24 hours and raising £1000, £1/mile.
'Combat Stress' was his chosen charity on this occasion; having raised thousands of pounds for a variety of different charities over 25 years, Dr Frampton is frank about his own life being touched by mental illness and so it seemed an obvious choice.
The journey wasn't without incident: the afternoon temperature on Snowdon hit 23'C making the climb hot, debilitating, and dehydrating. Dan was up and down in two hours and then it was on to Scafell - there they met the Mountain Rescue bringing a dead man off the hill.
Dr Frampton had "the jitters" as Dan set off but he was back under 2.5hrs, then they were off to Scotland in the twilight and came across plenty of red deer by the roadside and short eared owls overhead.
Dan tackled Ben Nevis at 03:30 and was down again by 09:30 - the pair took a detour to the Commandos' Memorial before hitting the road back South ... sure enough, the driving challenge came in under 19.5 hours.
They accomplished all their challenges: Dan his climbs in 19.5hrs and Dr Frampton the drive in 20.5 hrs. What's more the event raised a staggering £2000 for Combat Stress (the target was £1000 for 1000 miles!)
A great success all round - congratulations Simon and Dan!
