West Lancashire has voted to leave the EU.

QLocal's Roger Blaxall took these pictures at Burscough Sports Centre last night as the count got underway.

Some 35,323 voted to leave with 2854,6 wanting to stay on a turnout of a very creditable 74.47 percent; Blaxall saw voters making their way to polling stations as late as 9pm and they were queuing to vote at places like West End School in Ormskirk.

On R4 this morning, UKIP's Nigel Farage suggested we celebrate the momentous decision with an independence day public holiday in the future...

And at lunchtime, this statement was sent to QLocal by Aughton's Tony Green of Vote Leave:

'Dear Members/Friends/Supporters.
We VOTED LEAVE and took back control. What a great result for our Country and a great result here in West Lancs. 55% Voted Leave!
It has been my privilege to work with some really amazing people who by their hard work and dedication over a long period have made this result possible.
To the leafleteers, street stall helpers/organisers, board displayers, debate attendees, letter writers, web site controller and generous donators of time and money we owe a big debt of gratitude.
The LEAVE campaign was supported by members of all the local political parties but principally by UKIP, Conservative, Labour and Our West Lancashire .
I hope to get the chance to thank all supporters individually in the near future and will organise a get together ( drinks and nibbles) to celebrate our success.
Kind Regards and Best wishes
Tony Green VOTE LEAVE'
