Report from Mark Rawsthorn
After 90 years of continuous service, the electric blowing plant which supplies the wind for the organ in Ormskirk Parish Church finally gave out completely, rendering the instrument silent.
This organ, the largest church organ in Lancashire, requires a huge amount of wind available at a variety of pressures, and the twin blowers have supplied that since 1927.
After a long consultation process, the replacement blower was finally installed this week by Watkins and Watson, Ltd., from Poole, Dorset; one of only two specialist companies in the country.
The new plant consists of a single, large blower and is installed in a blowing chamber beneath the church. Because of the very limited access, the process involved a road closure to the main road past the church for around an hour on Tuesday night, while the very heavy machinery was lifted from the van and moved into the church.
After two days work, the new blower was finally commissioned on Wednesday and we are now in business again - although it has put a large dent in the funds which are so urgently required for other restoration work on the instrument!
