He died in Tunisia back in November 1942, aged just 27 - but he has never been forgotten by folk in his home village of Burscough.

And on Monday afternoon, there was a short but simple remembrance service to give thanks to God for the life of Private Sidney Turner at St John the Baptist Church.

Curate, the Rev. Ian Jones, kindly offered to conduct the service which came about after Richard Houghton of the local Royal British Legion and Lathom Burscough Military Heritage Society told him that Pt Turner had just a very simple memorial at the the grave of his parents on which he is named.

A Square Lane man, his brother and parents pre-deceased him, and were all buried in the same grave; he is survived only by his sisters. Monday afternoon's service was also attended by local Mayor Liz Savage with flowers laid from the people of west Lancashire in memoriam.
