Portico Nursery at Ormskirk West End welcomed the borough Mayor and Mayoress into the nursery yesterday to unveil their handmade poppy display, creating a 100 falling poppy arrangement in the garden area.

Children painted recycled plastic bottle tops to make these poppies and have given special thanks to one parent in particular; Suzanne Connell invested so much of her time to help staff and children ensure they had enough poppies to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Nursery staff have been talking to the children about why we remember the soldiers and why it’s important we do continue to remember them through age appropriate activities.

Ayla from Portico Nursery very enthusiastically commented ‘we have been learning the poppy song and remembering the soldiers in the poppy field.’ and the children delighted the Mayor, Mayoress, parents and friends with its performance.

Amanda Wiley from Portico told QLocal: "We work closely with our parents, we are one team shaping, developing and nurturing young minds. It’s imperative we instil manners and morals as well. We should remember all our armed forces who have and continue to serve. This is just one day in the year where we come together and remember and it should be marked as part of the children’s learning journey. Our team have been absolutely amazing getting this display perfect and we want to thank everybody involved in today’s event."
