If anyone's in any doubt about why there need to be red light cameras at the Green Lane/Hayfield Road junction with County Road, just watch this short video clip...
It was forwarded to QLocal by County Councillor Nicky Hennessy and was captured by Sarah Vesty on her dash cam - see how the foreign wagon speeds through a red light regardless.
Said Sarah: "I keep seeing letters, etc. in the Champion about how bad County Road is regarding people driving through red lights.
"I'd like to share a video i recently captured (14/09) of a lorry travelling through red lights at the Hayfield with no concern for anyone else.
"There might not have been an accident at this time but if I hadn't have been turning I would definitely be dead by now!
"He is travelling way faster than he should be.
"I have contacted the police but I don't think anything will be done!
"We need a campaign or something to do something about this junction because this is now taking people's lives!
And Nikki's pictured with Maxine Mortimer who recently raised a petition calling for more proactive safety measures at the junction; this evening, she released this PR to QLocal:
Response to speed enforcement on County Road Ormskirk using a 'red light'
Lancashire County Council were consulting on reducing the speed along the stretch of the A59 from 40 mph to 30 mph. This ended on 12th September and we are awaiting a report back.
Nikki Hennessy, the local County Councillor said: "I have been promoting this consultation for many months and tried to get residents to take this opportunity to have their voice heard by responding to the consultation.
"I have spoken with many residents who agree at the very least the speed should be reduced and also put forward suggestion such as putting a yellow box by The Five Ways Junction and The Hayfield Junction, staggering the lights and putting signs up earlier informing drivers to slow down.
"One of the comments I mentioned was ‘near misses’, which was exactly what happened to one of my constituents.
"There is no way to monitor ‘near misses’, except she has appeared to have captured a frightening event on her dashcam which I think is brilliant – sadly it was pretty scary for Sarah!
"I was actually standing at the same Hayfield Junction with a resident and saw exactly the same thing happen!
"I am aware people make lots of comments on Facebook sites or in local newspapers but they don’t make them comments where it will actually be able to make a difference.
"The consultation was a way to get people to engage and to get there observation and comments registered so that we can plan for the safety of that part of the road taking local knowledge into consideration.
"I would encourage residents to email me at Nikki.hennessy2@lancashire.gov.uk so that I can put their comments direct to officers and cabinet members.
"I asked LCC Highways to comment on the 'red light' petition and I was informed that the red light enforcement would be under the responsibility of the Speed Tasking Group; a partnership which includes Lancashire County Council and Lancashire Constabulary and was set up to prioritise requests for speed enforcement.
"Currently, there are no plans for immediate installation of red light enforcement cameras and there are none in operation throughout the whole of Lancashire.
"The Police are looking into new technologies in order for the camera to be reliable, cost effective and functioning accurately and are currently running trials. I have forwarded the e-petition to the Police for consideration as and when the cameras are at implementation stage
"I have invited an officer from the LCC Speed Management Team to attend the next PACT meeting for Knowsley & Scott Ward so that we can talk through the various suggestions.
"I am conscious of the considerable cuts that austerity has imposed on Lancashire Constabulary and Lancashire County Council and how this is limiting officer support in the community.
"I will continue to work together to keep our community safe."
