Sam’s on the starting line for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity
Merseyside’s golden girl Sam Quek is urging runners of all ages and ability to get involved in the Scouse 5K for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity.
Olympic hockey star Sam, who also starred in TV’s I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, showed her fun side when she joined staff and patients to help them warm up for October’s event.
Donning the obligatory curly wig, the gold medal winner from Wirral said: “The Scouse 5k is a great way to help The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity and good fun too.
“So if you’re game for a laugh then get involved and help transform cancer care.”
The Echo Scouse 5k will take place in Liverpool on 15th October. The route passes by some of Liverpool’s most iconic landmarks including St George’s Hall, The Metropolitan Cathedral, The Cavern and the Town Hall.
The emphasis is on fun and everyone who takes part will get a fun curly wig to wear on the day.
The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is the official charity partner for the event and Sam was joined by patient Tilly Dowling and her daughter Georgia Gibbons to get in training for the run.
Staff from The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre’s Delamere Ward were also getting warmed up for the event.
The run is one of six challenges Tilly and Georgia, from Birkenhead, are taking on to mark the six weeks of chemotherapy Tilly has received as part of her treatment for breast cancer.
They have already completed a walk along the Wirral Way and braved green gunge being tipped over them. Tilly is planning to abseil down Leasowe Lighthouse. Georgia has a bike ride planned and then then mum and daughter will do the Scouse 5k before ending their fundraising stint with the Santa Dash in Liverpool in December.
Georgia, 16, is a longstanding supporter and started fundraising for Clatterbridge when her granddad was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Tilly said: “It was lovely to meet Sam today and great that she is supporting the charity.
“We are really looking forward to the Scouse 5k. It will be good fun to put the silly wigs on and it looks like there will be a great atmosphere.”
The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity is striving to raise £15 million towards the construction of a new specialist hospital in Liverpool city centre and improvements to the Wirral site.
Samantha Archibald, Event Manager for The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity, said: “It’s amazing to see how the people of Merseyside are pulling together to help us build the best hospital we possibly can for them and their families.
“There is a tremendous community feel right now and what better way to get involved and help support Clatterbridge than unleashing your inner scouse, donning your curly wig and taking part in the ultimate fun run with your family and friends.”
