These are the dramatic scenes after a young schoolgirl was airlifted to hospital following a crash on Moss Lane, Burscough yesterday afternoon.

An accident investigator is marking out the scene of the incident in which the teenager was in collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter van in the 30mph section; it's not yet known if she was a local school pupil on her way home with the accident happening at around 3.45.

The girl was airlifted to Alder Hey by the North West Air Ambulance with head injuries; a Police PR officer said this morning she was in a 'critical but stable' condition. The 28-year-old van driver who worked for Sephton Transport was shaken but uninjured.

The busy A59 was closed from its junction with Red Cat Lane with community minded locals helping inform drivers travelling towards the scene down the A59 from Rufford, Tarleton and Preston of the road closure ahead.

Moss Lane re-opened around three hours after the crash which happened at around 4pm; this is the sole reminder of the accident scene last night.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to ring them on the 101 non emergency number quoting log number 920 of 21/9/16
