Report and photos from Peter Rogan
In the history of Ormskirk Cricket Club such success has never happened before and could possibly never happen again - but the unbelievable has happened ... and it all came together on the same day!
All three senior teams won their respective Premier League championships with two weeks to go in the season and defied all the odds to back up the claim that OCC is the top sports club in West Lancashire by a country mile.
On Saturday, the First XI travelled to Wadham Road to play long term rivals and nearest challengers, Bootle, needing seven points to secure the Championship. In a keenly contested game the last of those precious points was delivered when Tom Hartley claimed the wicket of Bootle’s Craig Prince.
Watching on the boundary were the Club’s Third XI players who had just won their Premier League Title by beating Sefton Park in double quick time and raced across Liverpool to cheer on their First XI clubmates.
Meanwhile the Second XI, playing at Brook Lane beat Birkenhead Park to gain maximum points and had a nervous wait to get results from other games to learn their fate.
The wait was worthwhile, and the results confirmed that where they where, sat at the top of the League, was where they would stay to claim the Championship.
It was all hands back to Brook Lane for a well deserved celebration.
The Liverpool and District Cricket Competition is the only Premier League in Lancashire and in National terms it is only outranked by Test Cricket, County Cricket and Minor Counties Cricket.
To have won all its Premier League Divisions is a unique achievement and brought a sporting record to West Lancashire - by any sporting standard, what has been achieved this season at Brook Lane is remarkable!
