The author of a book on WW1 recruits from Southport and Bootle will be signing copies of his new book From Docks and Sand tomorrow morning at Burscough Library.

Adrian Gregson, who is originally from Southport but now lives in Worcester, will be there from 10.30am to 12 noon.

'From Docks And Sand' is about soldiers in the 7th Battalion King’s Liverpool Regiment in 1914 being recruited from the Southport area as well as from the docklands and Bootle.

It tells the story of the regiment from being in France in 1915, when they fought at Festubert, through the Somme, to Passchendaele and then taking part in the German Spring Offensive in 1918. The lives and communities left behind in Southport and Bootle, including the riots that followed the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, are also covered in the book.

Adrian said the book is inspired by his great uncle, who was a soldier in First World War. It originated with conversations that he had with his grandmother, about her brother who was killed at Givenchy in the battle of the Lys in 1918.

County Councillor Peter Buckley, Lancashire County Council's cabinet member for community and cultural services, said: "This looks to be a really interesting book about the importance and significance of community identity to a battalion."
