An Edge Hill University academic and composer has created a sound installation for people with dementia.
The continually evolving ‘living’ installation is based in the Seaside Garden at Heathlands Village, a large care home in Prestwich run by leading North West social care charity The Fed.
Professor Steve Davismoon said: “I was honoured to be asked by The Fed to animate their Seaside Garden. I started by interviewing residents to find out which sounds they remembered from the seaside, then visited various locations in the North West and North Wales to record them, including Blackpool, Crosby, Formby and New Brighton.
“I was keen to capture not just the sound of the sea, but the sound ecology of the seaside, so dogs barking, children playing. I also captured some historic sounds including the Blackpool heritage trams and the East Lancashire Steam Railway in Bury. I’m still visiting locations and the installation will continue to grow.”
Residents are able to make requests for new sounds to be added to the installation, and Professor Davismoon has combined sounds to make different ‘mixes’ which can be played. He will gather feedback from residents and evaluate the installation’s impact on wellbeing – not only that of the residents – but also their families and the Heathlands Village staff.
The main focus of Professor Davismoon’s research is as a composer. He has written for a wide variety of voices, instruments and media, from solo, orchestral through to electroacoustic and sound installation works. His work has been performed throughout Europe and the Americas.
One of Professor Davismoon’s works was commissioned by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and focuses on the tragic history of the Salford Pals (Lancashire Fusiliers) in the lead up to the ‘Great Advance.
In addition to his work as a composer, Steve writes regularly on contemporary music history and practice.
