Report: Clare Williams
Saturday night was music night at Ormskirk School - and for 50 good reasons!
For a special and memorable evening saw the 50th anniversary concert of Ormskirk Music Society.
The choir and orchestra have been playing and singing together since 1967 and what better way to celebrate that than with a concert programme specially selected from the Society's early performance history?
It opened with the bustling excitement of Mozart's 'Cosi Fan Tutte' overture. The choral centrepiece of the evening followed in the form of the joyous 'Gloria' by Vivaldi. After the interval the orchestra performed a suite from Handel's 'Water Music' and finished in rousing style with Beethoven's '1st Symphony'.
As well as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Society, the occasion marked the 25 years of service by orchestral conductor, Jim Cooke, and a special presentation was made by longstanding Society members Ruth Beaumont and Peter Fletcher. And special guests on the evening were deputy mayor Noel Delaney and deputy mayoress Ann Stubbert.
The Society's next concert will be at St John's C of E Church in Burscough at 7.30pm on Saturday 16 December, which promises to be a festive feast of carols (including audience carols), seasonal music, wine and mince pies. Tickets are available in advance (call Clare on 07906 129393) or on the door, priced at £10 (£5 for children).
Here's to 50 more years of music-making in West Lancashire!
