The County Council's Conservative administration is proposing to implement on street charging for parking into towns and localities across Lancashire.
Initial areas for consideration comprise Ormskirk, Burnley, Lytham, Clitheroe, Whalley, Carnforth, Colne, Padiham, Nelson, Chorley, Cleveleys, Poulton and Great Harwood; other areas may be considered in the future.
The council is also looking to increase the number of on street pay and display machines and chargeable parking spaces in Lancaster and Preston which will include an expansion of the current on street parking across the city centres. It is also proposed to increase the level of on street parking charges. These proposals are hoping to make £185,000, with a continued revenue stream after that.
These proposals will not be part of the budget public consultation - however the individual schemes that will be introduced to the town centres will requires consultation as part of the legal process.
These proposals were supposed to be discussed at yesterday's Cabinet Meeting but the Conservative Leader supported by his Cabinet suspended the meeting. When it was reconvened the Conservatives moved the £77 million pounds of cuts without any further debate.
Cllr Azhar Ali, Labour Leader on Lancashire County Council said: “At a time when the Conservative Government claims it wants to help shop keepers in our towns, we have a Conservative Council in Lancashire looking to strangle trade on the high street by the introduction of this Tax.”
Added Aughton's Nikki Hennessy who represents Ormskirk: “This is a tax on trade that will see struggling local shop keepers pushed to the limits as passing trades and convenience shopping will go elsewhere.
"People across Lancashire are working hard to attract people to the local high street only to find their towns are to be used as a Conservative cash cow, on top of the 6% council tax increase with more increases to come.
“The council has also decide not to have this as part of the public consultation on the budget. Instead they will try to pick off one town at a time.
“We need to make our voices heard as the Conservative have stopped listening. People should email me and with their support we will make them listen to the people of Ormskirk.
"We are already doing a lot to build Ormskirk back up we can’t afford this Conservative Tax.”
