MP Rosie Cooper's given her support to businesses in Ormskirk town centre that have raised concerns over the declining level of trade in their shops.
MP Rosie has met with local retailers who have noted a drop in customer footfall and sales and while agreeing the Borough Council's taking steps to try address the issue, say it must act more quickly to face the risk of further decline of the town centre.
The council is currently seeking views of the businesses themselves about the way forward for the retail sector in Ormskirk.
Rosie told QLocal yesterday: “Ormskirk and West Lancashire needs to have an attractive offering for people to shop and socialise.
"I have met with many businesses and owners who have been concerned by a downturn in customers and sales.
"Many of these businesses wish to continue trading in the town but need to see more effort being put into making the town more vibrant and an attractive place to shop.
“We need to work together so I’m very happy to assist businesses and work with the council in hosting a meeting with the retail sector to discuss the challenges we face and work towards solutions to ensure we stop the decline and bring people back shopping in Ormskirk.”
One of the business owners she met with was Stuart Mills from Scotts the butchers on Church St which since the closure of Tesco has been markedly quieter; the old established shop was relaunched in 2015 with great fanfare.
And one of the most illuminating conversations QLocal reporter Roger Blaxall has had recently was with a former councillor who said that talking about the problems with car parking in the town centre with some leading Conservatives from the former administration was like 'talking to a brick wall'.
