Almost everyone uses a computer these days and we take it for granted that it will be running Microsoft Windows. But this can cause many problems : it costs a hefty part of the purchase price of a machine; it brings many security issues; and its a monopoly owned by a foreign corporation.

Maurice George, a local computer enthusiast, is setting up a club which introduces people to an alternative to the Microsoft Windows operating system. It's called Linux; it's free, all programs are free and it has no viruses, which cause serious risks for users of Windows. It's not owned by an enormous corporation or a multi-millionaire.

An operating system like Windows or Linux does all the jobs involved in making a computer work; it runs programs, keeps our files on a hard disk and connects with the Internet.

Mr George is offering a free disk to anyone who wants to install a Linux operating system alongside Windows.
All you need to do is come to a meeting of the new West Lancs Linux Club in Ormskirk. It's going to be a friendly sociable event for experts, beginners and anyone who simply wants to find out more.
