Motorists suffered the biggest monthly rise in the average price of petrol in at least 18 years with 6p a litre being added at the pumps in May, new data from the RAC reveals.

The average cost of unleaded fuel shot up from 123.43p to 129.41p per litre, taking the cost of filling up a 55-litre family car to £71.18 – an increase of £3.29 in just one month.

The average price of a litre of diesel endured rose by 6.12p, from 126.27p to 132.39p. This is the second biggest rise since the start of 2000 – when the RAC started recording the data – but still some way behind the 8.43p increase seen in May 2008 (120.83p to 129.26p).

In May the big four supermarkets raised petrol by 5.49p a litre and diesel by 5.88p on average. On the motorway, service stations added 6.37p to unleaded, taking it to 144.75p a litre, and 6.69p to diesel making it 147.80p a litre – 15p a litre above average UK prices for both fuels.

Data from the RAC also shows the average prices of both petrol and diesel have gone up every single day since 22 April – the longest sustained price increase since March 2015.

Being a minicab driver, and I had noticed the increases,so I put a comment on the forum section,as to the fuel prices at Kew BP garage, one day it would go up 2p a litre, then drop by 3p a litre, then up and then down again, but has now steadily risen to its present 131.9 per litre of diesel, which was around 122.9 a litre about 5 weeks ago.And some garages are a lot dearer, and noticed that the once cheaper Shell garage in Ainsdale village,as their prices are now seemingly the highest in the area,up to 137.9 per litre for diesel, and there is nothing a motorist can do but shop around for their fuel,as they are getting ripped off by the oil company prices, due to how much per barrel a day it is,but the drivers are aways the ones who suffer, whether the price per barrel goes up or down, they have to pay whatever the costs the forecourts charge at each garage, just another way to increase the fuel tax for a working person to have to take from their wages.

All motorists should band together and boycott one particular fuel company at a time.
Start with BP, who are the biggest rip off merchants of the lot. If everyone steered clear of BP for at least a week, they would have to think long and hard about their willingness to increase prices so often.
Also, Southport residents should fuel up out of town whenever possible, it`s always cheaper. I bought diesel just tonight at Sainsbury`s Walton, it was 125.9, around 6 pence cheaper than anywhere in Southport. I cannot remember the last time I fuelled up in Southport, it must literally years ago.

I think motorists should be more upset at the Government.

Imagine a scenario like this -

W'ed like you to pay tax on your hard earned salary then - we'd like you to pay some more tax when you buy your car then - we'd like you to pay a tax to drive your car on some of the worst roads in western Europe then - we'd like you to pay an insurance premium tax (we're not sure what that's for yet) then - we'd like you to pay tax on the fuel to make the vehicle go down the crappy road then - we'd like you to pay tax on the repair bill for damage caused by driving down the crappy road.

Surely no one would be daft enough to put up with this - would they?

If we ever get the new Sainsbury's at Meols Cop it will be interesting to see if they fall in with the Southport Rip-off Price Cartel or whether they become the cheapest in the area (as at their stores at Bamber Bridge and Liverpool where unleaded is currently 117.9p in comparison with Southport's 127p average).

As another poster said: Don't buy in Southport. The supermarket petrol stations here are taking the ****.

Its actually the fuel retailers profiteering,For starters the oil futures prices were for contracts in July there should of actually been no price increases until then

,we are being cheated ,Secondly there was a 19 dollar spread between Permian WTI and Brent .This should of offset the price increase,But as you can see the retailers have bought oil at a huge discounted barrel price but then used the price of Brent to artificially increase the price. It is not the government and to suggest it is is ridiculous Imagine a scenario like this -
