    ye olde silver spoone

    Hello John ...

    I was wondering whether you could identify the age and origin this old silver spoon, please? I've looked for the hallmark in various reference books ... but to no avail:

    (crown; Letter 'A' in a shield; fleur de lys; crown; the initials "GW" in a vertical form.)

    The spoon is of a very plain 'no frills' design, and has an unusually long, curved, handle, measuring 5.5 inches. It has been in the back of my mum's cutlery drawer for as long as I can remember!

    Best wishes.
    Imp.

    Hi Imp.........You say

    "I've looked for the hallmark in various reference books ... "

    First question........................... is the spoon silver

    ANSWER NO...........that is why you can not find the hall mark in any of the books.

    The spoon is English and dates back to the early 1900s

    English Silver has a hall mark of a LION
    Chester a SHIELD
    Birmingham an ANCHOR
    London a LEOPHARD HEAD
    Sheffield a CROWN
    etc..........

    each year a date letter eg.
    a = Birmingham C1900
    A= London C1876

    The Kings head can also be part of a hall mark from about 1770
    and Queen Victoria's head from about 1840

    The hall marks on your spool are put on to make the spoon look like it is real silver. The double crown indicates it was made in Sheffield.

    sorry to say no value.

    Good Ref Book on SILVER is "The Book of Old Silver by Seymour B Wyler

    good luck

    Many thanks for that info, vanman.

    Tsk ... there were some cheeky chappies around in the early 1900s then?!
