  1. Martin Mere

    Some pictures from Martin Mere.

  2. YOUR COMMENTS:

  3. never been to Martin Mere, my children went when they were at Norwood Rd School. Seeing these pics i feel that i realy should go. Fantastic close up shots

  4. Great to see a few nice looking birds

  5. What great pictures--how long has Martin Mere been like this? I seem to remember that years (too many!) ago it was a sort of mysterious spot, a place to keep away from--or am I thinking of some other Mere? I remember being told stories of a mysterious maid or siren that supposedly lived under the waters of Martin Mere.

Those bird pics a fantastic--can count the feathers!

  6. Great Pictures. I think these birds are all quackers?

  7. Vivra Patricia - I remember those stories too! There was something about Excalibur possibly being at the bottom of the Mere.

  8. Carrolta, as I remember nobody knew how deep the water was, and the Maid of the Mere was supposed to lure men down to her home in the black mud below! I've actually written a short story (fiction) about that, but I suppose I'll have to change the name of the Mere in it now that, apparently, Martin Mere is--what? a wildlife park? therefore more well known to the public.

  9. Thank you, Roving--really interesting. I bet it's a wonderful sight to see all those birds. What a fun idea--pay 50p and guess which bird will arrive first! Another reason I wish I were back in Southport! So close to many wonderful things--including the Flower Show and the Air Show!

  10. THIS is an interesting read. It tells of the history of the area from North Meols to South Ribble which was vastly changed when they drained Martin Mere.

ur thinking of maid marrian and sir. lancerlot.plus his friend merlin. iv lived on the mere for 56yrs. and there could be some truth in it if u study the history .

  12. Ped--thanks for the link to that site on the history of that area. I've saved it to read at length.

Earthman1--I don't remember the stories I heard actually mentioned Sir Lancelot etc., but then, my memory isn't what it was, it's been 50 years! Oh, wow, that sounds awful--I don't feel that old!

WHERE THE MARTIN MERE BIRD RESERVE IS SITUATED IS ONLY A FRACTION OF WHAT WAS THE MERE WHICH WAS FORMED BY ICEAGE GLASSIERS AFTER THE LAST ICE AGE 5000YRS.BC.IT WAS THE LARGEST NATURAL LAKE IN ENGLAND BUT WAS NOT VERY DEEP .I HAVE A FEW FACTUAL STORIES WHICH I MUST QUILL DOWN.

  15. Are there any other named Meres in the Southport area? I seem to remember taking walks around, or close to, one in the Woodvale area--I was married to an Airman stationed at Woodvale at the time.
