    Report: Brian Brighouse

Four of the five matches in the Ormskirk and District Pool League were settled by the odd frame this week. Two of the fixtures involved the top 4 sides and although The Bridge remain top of the league, they lost this time around; La Cantina A beat them by 5 (6) frames to 2 to close the gap on the leaders.

In the other tie, The Stanley Club beat the Queen Inn by the odd game to secure 5 points compared to the Queen Inn’s 3. Those results make it very interesting in the race for league honours. The Bridge have 79 points from their 14 matches whilst their nearest rivals, The Stanley Club find themselves 5 points behind on 74. The Stanley Club do however, have a match in hand.

The other two teams, La Cantina A and the Queen Inn, in contention for league honours have 73 points from 13 matches. In the event of a tie, division positions are determined firstly by the team that has the better head to head record against the other team(s) on the same number of points.

If there is still a tie the team with the highest number of individual game wins will be the placed higher - and if there is still a tie there is a play-off on a neutral table.

The league's committee (comprised of a representative from each team) decided at their last meeting that the top 3 teams will receive trophies, so one of those 4 looks set to lose out.

With teams having either, 7 or 8 matches still to play its not impossible for other teams to catch the top 4 but it’s probably unlikely. The nearest challengers have 57 points at this stage, they are the Farmers (from 14 matches) and last years champions Bar 22 (from 13 matches). Indeed, those two met at Bar 22’s Moorgate home this week with the home team taking the fixture 4(5) -3. Pinewoods, who joined the league this season, are yet to win a match in the league, but they are regularly getting close.

This time around Shaw Hall A visited their Formby home and came away winning by the odd game.
In the final match of the week Shaw Hall Holiday Park completed their first match win of the season when they defeated the visiting Whittaker’s team by the odd game.

That result sees them move above Pinewoods by two points as they try to avoid the wooden spoon.

The Stanley Club's Martin Gallego continues to lead the way in the quest to be crowned league Player of the Year by winning again this time around. Martin has now won 11 (91.67%) of the 12 singles matches he has played.

Although we are not considering an award for the overall best league player of the year, I think it’s worth mentioning La Cantina A’s Mike Merwin. Mike has won 5 of the 6 singles matches he has played and all of the 5 doubles matches he has been involved in, a 90.91% success rate. In fact, three of La Cantina A’s plays feature towards the top of this list, Harry White has won 11 (84.62%) of the 13 matches he has played but perhaps more remarkable is Brian Salters. Brian has won 16 (84.21%) of the 19 matches he has played.

Although it may seem unreasonable to the discerning reader, the reason we are not considering such an award is that only a small amount of players regularly play in the singles and pairs competitions.
