The traditional red poppy has for generations been a sign of respect for people lost in military conflict.
The white poppy is a sign of pacifism - and now an Ormskirk company is having a special evening to remember the millions of animals killed in human wars.
The number of animals killed in military conflict is staggeringly high with an estimated eight million horses and donkeys dying in World War One alone; an estimated 750,000 dogs were killed in one week in Britain at the outbreak of World War Two as the government told pet owners they would not have enough rations to feed animals.
Purple poppies were launched in the UK in 2006 and are often worn alongside traditional poppies and are also widespread in Australia where the national animal memorial association sells them.
Pangea Sculptures of County Road have teamed up with The War Horse Memorial, and on Wednesday 17 October is holding a evening of remembrance and celebration of the War Horse and 100th year since the Great War ended.
Said Bev Howard from Pangea: "The evening will be an informal affair and a unique opportunity to hear more about The War Horse Memorial, and a chance to meet veterans and supporters of the The War Horse Memorial fund.
"We'll also celebrate our on-going support for the appeal, with our own 'War horse' being showcased in Booths, Burscough very soon."
