    Report: Sue Hodgkins

A wonderful Poppies of Peace project in Burscough which started two years ago is now in full bloom!

The project began when it was realised that 2018 was the year the Great War ended and that there should be a special commemoration for those who fought and lost their lives for our freedom.

The idea was from the premise that if London and Liverpool could have fantastic poppy displays why couldn't the village of Burscough?

Local knitting groups were contacted and joined in with the WoolnChat group, which meets on a Monday afternoon at St John's Church hall in School Lane, to knit over 5,000 poppies. The group contacted Burscough Parish Council and the Royal British Legion to see if their plan was feasible and this led to Richard Houghton (secretary of the LBMHS) being able to source a metal horse to represent the many horses which were sent to war from Lathom.

Pangea in Ormskirk generously loaned two horses with Booths and Tesco happy to have them on display; the Booths display was put together using information from Richard Houghton, local primary schools art work (including those in Newburgh, Scarisbrick and Lathom), and decorated with purple poppies. Tesco also arranged for a horse from Pangea which was also decorated with poppies together with a Thank You board to all who have been involved.

The Wharf put up a great display which included a 'Thank you, Knitters' board; local pubs, businesses, shops also supported the effort by having displays of poppies on their premises.

St John's Parish Church put on 'Remembrance 100 exhibition, talks and a play written by the vicar (which, in summer, was part of the Edinburgh fringe) and the church website has further information.

Burscough Parish Council organised for the wreaths of poppies and poppy balls to be fixed on the hanging basket frames.

The community have been tremendous in supporting the venture; pictured on Tuesday with Sue (second left) are Sandra, Olwen and on right hand side Ros (in blue) and Sylvia.

    THANK YOU, BURSCOUGH!
