It was a tough enough week for Aughton Cricket Club, playing title chasing Earlestown with a depleted squad - but the blow of a late cry off meant that an already understrength team went into the game with 10 men... a bitter pill to swallow.

Playing the champions elect with a weakened team meant captain Andy Barnes needed to think outside the box and it nearly proved a masterstroke.

On a soaking wet wicket he read the situation perfectly and while the wicket was wet the ball skidded onto the bat and the first 10 overs provided by far the best batting conditions of the entire game, illustrated by the fact the only Aughton players to reach double figures were opening batsman, 65-year-old veteran Woods and new comer Mehta.

Then as the wicket dried out conditions became very difficult and only skipper Barnes coped and was unfortunate to be dismissed courtesy of a splendid catch from opposition skipper Allen.

Leading run scorer Waterhouse was a disappointment as he was tamely bowled around his legs for a duck and Aughton were dismissed for a poultry 56. Albeit not quite as bad as it seemed under the conditions and the fact it was a rain effected 31 over game.

Aughton needed to get off to a good start but alas didn’t have the necessary fire power; opening bowler Taylor didn’t find Earlestown as generous as Burscough seconds the week before and couldn’t find the breakthrough - in all honesty the opposition were a class above Aughton.

Even on a minefield of a surface Aughton’s attack couldn’t muster a breakthrough and Earlestown got over the line in the 9th over with Aughton now looking nervously over their shoulder at other struggling teams once again.

The real positives of the game were the appearances of Edge Hill students Ravenscroft and Fletcher - in the latter's case travelling back from Bradford to play for the club week in, week out showing great commitment to the cause.

Aughton hope to resist the approaches of a local Liverpool Competition Premier club who have already poached an Aughton player for next season and keep hold of both players who have been splendid additions to the club.
