Looking lovely - this is the fire station roundabout after council workmen spent two days there tidying it up and planting it out.
It was done as part of the public realm works the Borough Council undertakes on behalf of Lancashire County Council; a number of gateway roundabouts are maintained in addition to maintaining the grass and controlling weed growth.
This year the Borough Council plans to improve two key locations - the roundabout next to Ormskirk Fire Station has now been planted up with seasonal bedding plants around the existing shrubbery to provide a vibrant, colourful welcome to the town throughout the summer months. And later this year, following generous contributions from local residents, Hope Island in Skelmersdale will be planted with daffodil bulbs to help revive the roundabout in tribute to local cancer sufferers.
Cllr Kev Wilkie, the Borough Council portfolio holder for Street Scene, said: "We are ambitious for West Lancashire to have a good quality environment.
"We are really pleased to be working with Lancashire County Council and local residents to bring about these improvements in key locations across the Borough that really matter to local residents."
But you can't please all of the people all of the time, as local independents OWL have proved; read the last paragraph...
This PR from them arrived at the busy QLocal news desk a few days ago:
"Our West Lancashire have welcomed news that the Borough council will restore summer bedding to the roundabout by the Fire Station after Cllr Kate Mitchell raised the matter with the Director of Street Scene on Monday.
Cllr Mitchell, who made improvements to the roundabout one of her manifesto policies in last month’s election said: “I am pleased that the council appear to have listened to the concerns of Ormskirk residents.
"I found out that the advertising income was bringing in more than £3000 on that roundabout alone and have been in contact last week with the solicitors’ firm who advertise there.
"When I raised the matter on Monday with the Director of Street Scene she was keen to see if improvements could be made and I’m delighted with this response to my campaigning on this issue. I hope that the display will be as good as in the recent past.”
Cllr Adrian Owens who was the councillor responsible for the original daffodil planting at Hope Island in Skelmersdale welcomed news of fresh daffodil bulb planting there but added that OWL would continue to campaign about the state of other feature roundabouts in West Lancashire.
He particularly singled out the roundabout at Pippin Street in Burscough.
“It’s a jungle and the council’s basic grass cutting maintenance there is failing. It desperately needs improving.”
