The emotive television documentary Ambulance, focused on the work of North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, has been shortlisted for a prestigious National Television Award. Ambulance made the shortlist in the factual category along with last year’s winner, Paul O’Grady: For The Love of Dogs and TV favourites Gogglebox, Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip and Jesy Nelson: ‘Odd One Out’. Series five of the BBC One programme was broadcast in summer 2019 and followed control staff and ambulance crews responding to patients in Greater Manchester. The programme took viewers on an emotional roller-coaster as it followed the stories of local people in their time of need. A regular in both serious four and five, Advanced Paramedic Luke was seen delivering a baby, battling to save the life of teenager involved in a serious road traffic incident, searching the river following reports of a floating body and supporting an elderly woman who called the service 23 times in one day alone.
Luke said: “The root of these problems is social isolation and loneliness. What’s happened is they have snowballed and we deal with them at the end point, it’s frustrating because if we dealt with the root cause we could save a lot of ambulance time. “When I have a moment to stop and think and actually process jobs, the things that we see and the frustrations, the biggest thing that comes out of it is how appreciative I am of what I have. For me no matter what happens I know I have got my family.” The National Television Awards is Britain’s leading TV awards event where all the winners are chosen exclusively by the public. The results will be revealed live on ITV from The O2 London in a spectacular celebration of the nation’s most loved stars and shows. Cast your vote now!
