Yes, you read that right - West Midlands Police are investigating an attempted murder in what many call 'sleepy' Bickerstaffe.

Details are now coming to light of the horrendous ordeal of a Polish man who was driven up from the Birmingham area and dumped - badly burned - in the Intake Lane area late one Wednesday night last month.

He eventually found his way to exclusive Ben Lane Court at around 11pm on 27 March; a lady who'd just returned home from a badminton match with her next door neighbour was preparing for bed when the man hammered on her door wanting an ambulance.

He evidently spoke little English to tell her of his plight but another neighbour, hearing the commotion, smelt petrol and - realising how badly injured he was - rang 999.

He was rushed to Whiston hospital with what a North West Ambulance Service media officer confirmed were 'serious burns'.

She said: "We were called to an address in Bickerstaffe at 22.51 on the evening of 27 March. A man in his mid 30's was taken to the burns unit at Whiston hospital."

He suffered were said to be 80 per cent burns and for a time was under police guard at the hospital.

The following day, West Midlands detectives, assisted by Lancashire officers conducted house to house enquiries - a tip off from a local man to QLocal's Tim Johnson of QLocal Southport saw reporter Roger Blaxall make his own enquiries, assisted by a former Merseyside officer who pointed him in the direction of Ben Lane Court two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, the busy West Midland's Police PR office released this statement exclusively to QLocal on Wednesday afternoon: "A Birmingham man found in Bickerstaffe, Lancashire is in a critical condition following a serious assault.

Officers from West Midlands Police and
Lancashire Constabulary are working together to investigate the circumstances and identify those responsible.

Specialist officers are currently providing the victim’s family with support.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police via Live Chat at west-midlands.uk between 8am and midnight or call 101. Information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

It's not known if the incident is drug related, QLocal's Roger Blaxall will be following the story up next week.
