Food for thought from Facebook with this story on how a Kirkby church's foodbank - supported from day one by Aughton Park Baptist Church - has thrived against all odds in the Covid 19 crisis.

This email has been circulated to church members:

'Thought you may want to see the latest Kirkby Foodbank update from Pastor Graham Peel of Northwood Chapel - very encouraging!

"It's been quite a journey since the start of lock down. We began somewhat despondently - especially since our friends from Aughton were no longer able to help each week, and we also "lost" the weekly contribution to our shelves, which represented about 1/3rd of our weekly distribution of tins, not to mention the fact that you guys at Aughton always gave us the best stuff that we could never stretch to purchasing - tinned meats, Fray Bentos pies and, dare I say it, even the occasional tin of salmon!

We viewed your weekly giving as the Lord's provision, but naturally speaking we were somewhat fearful when it , of necessity, ended. Our cupboard was fast running out, then all the other food banks closed as lock down began, and we prayed "Lord, what should we do? If you want us to keep sharing the gospel through our food bank, we really need you to provide for us." And so, He did...and continues to do so.

Since the start of lock down we have received huge donations of tins and all kinds of other things from a local school, local businesses and the folk of Kirkby.

The Lord put it into their hearts to give to the food bank by raising our profile on a local Facebook group: Kirkby Past and Present which has some 13,000+ members. Without drilling down into their motive for giving we simply see it as the Lord's way of providing, much as the Israelites collected gold and jewellery from their Egyptian neighbours.

The Lord also put into the hearts of various charitable foundations and businesses to support the work - the Steve Morgan Foundation, Rathbones, Tesco, B&M... and more besides with the result that in addition to a mountain of food stuffs we have also received close to £20,000 in grants and gifts. It is somewhat overwhelming when God wonderfully demonstrates that He is able to above all that we could ask or think.

Our original prayer had in mind a few tins to allow us to keep going in a limited fashion: He provided the means for us to triple our busiest weekly giving so that we now give over 1,000 tins and other items per week. We still run a limited version of the drop-in food bank, but with no cafe ministry. But our main distribution is through our home delivery service - a new innovation in response to people self-isolating throughout the Covid-19 crisis. This has enabled us to maintain and develop gospel opportunities with some of our most vulnerable members, and it has also given us the opportunity to give gospel literature each week in their deliver bag.

We have given gospels, tracts and books by people such as Roger Carswell and John Blanchard and it is apparent from the doorstep conversations that people are reading what they've been give. In addition to our existing contacts many other people have been referred to us through local schools, family members, pastors of other churches, and it has been wonderful to know we never have to say "no" on grounds of lack of available tins.

Although our weekly output is at 300% of normal our cupboard is quite literally full to the brim - with many, many tins of the "quality" items we used to receive from you lovely fellow labourers at Aughton.
