A welcome return to form by Aughton Cricket Club on Saturday saw Kieren Webber record his maiden 50 for The Greens at Birkenhead St Mary’s.
Captain Andy Barnes won the toss for once and inserted Birkenhead. Barnes handed the new ball to the returning Brian Woods and the veteran Gary Taylor who at 58 showed age is no barrier and bowled an exceptional 8 over spell of lively medium pace, picking up the danger man Vincent caught at slip by Woods. Taylor’s return to form yielded 2 - 20 from his allotted overs.
Mick Miller look-a-like Jones top scored for Birkenhead with a fine 48 but it was Hamid who was the comedian who decided to re write the laws of the game with joke decision In denying Buchanan a clear stumping. Birkenhead finished on 150 for 7 from their 40 overs with Greame Barnes taking 3 for 38 and Adam Waterhouse 2 for 16 from their 8 overs respectively.
Aughton were soon on the ropes at 6 for 2 with openers Harnick and Buchanan back in the shed. This brought the in form Waterhouse to the crease where he and man of the match Kieren Webber battled hard and put together a match winning partnership of 115.
A moment of controversy then occurred when Waterhouse was adjudged to be LBW for a well constructed 51, if the decision had been reviewed to the third umpire it would have likely been shown that the ball was going over the stumps however the day belonged to Webber who along with Paul Stephens saw Aughton home in the 35th over with Webber ending unbeaten on 59.
A much needed win for Aughton who move clear of the relegation zone for now at least and next welcome fellow strugglers Skelmersdale to Winifred Lane for a local derby.
