A new ‘third-wave’ coffee shop which opened on Burscough St. in mid November looks to have closed - for good.

Bayfern's website has disappeared with its FB and Twitter pages moribund - yesterday QLocal's Roger Blaxall left an ansafone message for owner Joanne Baybutt to give her an opportunity to put paid to rumours about the venture's future.

Bayferns opened in the old Jospice charity shop offering a mixture of single origin coffee and signature blends. The third-wave coffee shop produced high-quality coffee, with the owner saying that she treats coffee as an artisanal foodstuff, like wine, rather than a commodity.

Teacher Joanne of Preston took a 10-year lease on the ground floor and first floor of the property, located near Wheatsheaf Walk. It's not known yet what the landlords - the Borough Council - plan to do with the premises whose windows have been whitewashed over for the past few days.

Said Burt Jones from neighbouring Timpsons: "Joanne had her keys cut a few months ago and back then I said she was taking a big chance. She said she had 'done her homework'. Famous last words?"

This is not the first time a teacher has opened a cafe in this part of Ormskirk thinking they could make a go of it. Those that can, do, those that can't, teach.
