Police are hunting for brazen thieves who struck at a village church overnight - and stole part of its valuable footpath.
These are the exclusive pictures of damage to St. Cuthbert's CE, Halsall, from earlier today.
QLocal's busy Ormskirk reporter Roger Blaxall spoke to Tom Owen this teatime; his local groundworks firm re-laid the original path over 25 years ago and he reckons to replace the York stone that's been stolen will cost 'thousands and thousands of pounds.'
He added that one option might be to Tarmac it, although it's very early days for the Liverpool Diocese to make any decision on how best to make good the damage; whatever happens, another irreplaceable piece of local heritage has gone, and perhaps been lost forever...
Meanwhile, the local community safety officer for the borough council, Cliff Owen, has confirmed that footage of suspicious activity outside the church has been passed onto local police, saying: "Our CCTV Team have received a request regarding this incident and have prepared a disc for the Police.
"I understand the footage shows suspicious activity, however, as it was late at night and dark, I'm not sure of how helpful it will be to the police and this will only be determined once they've had an opportunity to review the footage."
One line of enquiry by Police might be to check on local travellers in and around the area.
