Ormskirk didn't exactly give them a welcoming 'hi de hi' - but yesterday evening is was bye de bye as the travellers who'd taken over Churchfields left after their 'one night stand'.
Their arrival saw a flurry of emails and texts from some QLocal readers concerned about how they might be breaking the law and lockdown rules - and cramping the style of those who used Churchfields for daily exercise. Paddling pools and a washing line were evident and it looked like the group - socially distanced in fashion - were ready for a longer stay in the town.
By teatime though it was all over though - and locals were quick to get in some last minute sunbathing in the glorious May weather.
Police maintained a watching brief with a number of visits to the 'camp' while local councillor Adam Yates - always quicker off the mark than the council PR office - was putting reassuring statements out on local social media. And later on, Coun. Gareth Dowling had posted pictures of the 'all clear' at Churchfields while reporter Roger Blaxall received an intriguing e-mail for BC in Halsall, a good friend of QLocal.
He reckoned that the real reason the travellers decamped to Ormskirk was to do with a heavily pregnant lady whose family wanted her closer to the maternity ward at Ormskirk hospital, they left a 'camp' in Ainsdale to make suitable preparations for the imminent birth, ironic given the fact that many in Ormskirk gave them a 'wide berth'...
Here's the borough council's statement on the matter:
'The Council is aware of the traveller community currently occupying land at Churchfields in Ormskirk and is working with the support of the Police to address the matter. It is working in accordance with current Government guidance, as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, and will take action as appropriate. Finally, the occupants of the site have confirmed to the Police that their intention is to vacate by Monday 1 June. The Council will keep the situation under review.'
