Christ Church, Aughton was packed on Tuesday afternoon for the funeral service of Iain Mackenzie.

The 77-year-old from Mere Brow died on 24 May after battling cancer, kidney problems and Parkinson’s.

In one memorable quotation, he told friend Stuart Pascall - who gave the funeral address – ‘Cancer might get me, but it won’t get ME!’

That stoical approach to life and death summed up Iain who hailed from Burscough and had a varied life working at Atco, Ormskirk, for British Rail, as a youth worker and later, after studying at Liverpool University, leader of youth services across Sefton.

He'd attended Cottage Lane Mission, where he worshiped with wife Beryl, in a variety of ways from birth, during his teens and working life and especially after taking early retirement on health grounds.

Iain loved poetry, walking and family life, and earlier in the afternoon, around 100 family and friends gathered for a short funeral service at the beautiful West Lancashire Crematorium, led by CLM minister, Neil Rees.

But it was the sheer number of people who met later at a packed Christ Church which showed in just how high a regard Iain was held by friends and work colleagues.

His poem 'Mortality' was on the opening page of his order of service - it was written in October, proving a fitting epitaph for Iain whose service featured his life story, recollections of his church and work life, music and poetry with his poem ‘The Last Word’ followed by a fitting hymn ‘How great Thou art’.
